David Lee Berkowitz
Founder, Managing Partner, Chief Investment Officer
David L. Berkowitz is the Founder and Chief Investment Officer of ValueAligned Partners (“VAP”). He studied at Columbia University in New York where he earned his Bachelor of Arts (“BA”) degree in economics in 1986. His senior seminar thesis focused on global currency areas and international capital flows under the father of “Supply-Side” Economics and Nobel Laureate, Robert Mundell.
In 1997 he received from Columbia Business School a Master of Business Administration (“MBA”) degree in finance with a concentration in accounting/financial reporting and value investing.
David launched VAP in 2002 just as the technology and entertainment stock market crash was ending. He spent the last 35 years advising and teaching families, corporate boards, top managers, and rank and file employees about valuation and investments. An economist, teacher, expert speaker, investor, stock trader, and entrepreneur, Berk has provided “Peace of Mind” for those preparing for retirement and those in retirement. His knowledge has helped many individuals and their families overcome the adverse effects of two of the worst stock market crashes in history coming in just the past 20 years.
David has also designed and conducted corporate finance education and EVA training for over 6,500 corporate board members, C-suite executives, financial staff in treasury and investor relations, division heads, plant managers, and rank and file shop floor employees. He has spoken at local National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI) chapters and Analyst Societies in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, and Washington.
He has also spoken at Columbia University’s School of Business, Fabozzi’s Value Metric Conference, the American Management Associate (AMA), and IBM’s Advanced Business Institute.
Growing up and raising a family in Middletown, NJ
David was raised in Middletown, NJ. His wife for 36 years, Patti Bachman Berkowitz, is also a Middletown native. David and Patti started dating in 1978 when they attended Thompson Junior High School together.
Patti is an Advanced Practice Nurse (“APN”), or nurse practitioner, for a Hackensack Meridian internal medicine practice in Point Pleasant, NJ. She enjoys tennis, extreme workouts, and Edgewater Beach and Cabana Club in Sea Bright, NJ.
They have been blessed with three children: Matthew, Daniel, and Anna. All three children attended the same three public schools that their mom and dad went to, Nut Swamp Elementary School, Thompson Middle School, and Middletown High School South, except that David grew up in Lincroft, NJ so he did not go to Nut Swamp Elementary School, but to Lincroft School.
Matthew Berkowitz, 28
Matthew is an employee at No Limits Cafe, one of David and Patti’s favorite charities. The Cafe empowers adults with intellectual disabilities by providing jobs and job training to help them lead fulfilling lives within our community and to increase awareness of their potential. “Eat well, do good” is its slogan.
Matt has been working at No Limits Cafe for a couple of years. Unlike most of the other No Limits Cafe employees, this is not Matt's first job, but it is his favorite job. He knows most of the other employees from previous experiences and enjoys the camaraderie at the Cafe. He loves seeing people that he knows eating in the Cafe. These are relationships that have always been difficult for Matt to make and enjoy, but not anymore.
His long-term goal is to be a manager.
An avid sports fan, Matt loves the New York Giants, the New York Yankees, and the New York Rangers. Ask him anything about these teams and the answer is usually forthcoming.
Daniel Berkowitz, 23
Daniel came to work at VAP in 2021 after he graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor of Science (“BS”) degree in business. See his bio below for more on Daniel. Hint: he likes hockey.
Anna Berkowitz, 20
Anna is a Junior at Penn State University at State College. She is majoring in Telecommunications with a minor in digital media trends and analytics. Anna is a sorority sister of Sigma Delta Tau and was the leading fundraiser for Thon, a student-run philanthropy committed to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer. She is trained in classical dance and now she dances for charity.
