What’s in a name?

A lot, it turns out.

For years, I have been managing finances and sharing stock advice as ValueAligned® Partners, though government forms and applications continued to refer to our company by its former identity, Rapidan Capital.

Well, friends, I’ve decided it is time for a name change – once and for all.

The name Rapidan Capital, LLC, is gone for good. After all, ValueAligned® is who we are, and who we always have been.

Immediately after I launched my hedge fund in 2002, I noticed a frustrating flaw in the concept, that the people who needed my help the most – my friends and family and so many others who were devastated when the tech bubble burst – would rarely, if ever, be able to benefit from my investment advice – the government said they did not have enough money. So I attempted to devise a cost-effective means for anyone and everyone to benefit from my suggestions.

ValueAligned® Partners was the answer.

So what does that mean? It’s simple, really. The brand ValueAligned® was developed to reflect the ideals of rational, systematic investing in the stocks of good companies whose management are aligned with shareowners.

ValueAligned® means buying undervalued stocks of exceptional companies, who use Value-based Management (VBM) and EVA® (Economic Value Added principles).

Unlike most brokers that call themselves “advisors”, we are only paid by our clients.  We do not sell any financial products for which we are paid commissions by a third party.  We only make more money when our clients make more money and less money when our clients’ accounts hit those temporary interruptions of the stock market’s permanent uptrend. In that way, our interests are aligned.

Here’s the thing: Shareowners and management of modern corporations are out of sync because of the separation of ownership and control. Most management teams own very little company stock. Consequently, most companies do not manage for shareowners – there’s nothing in it for them, so they don’t go out of their way to create value for investors. ValueAligned® Partners only invests in companies that do. That makes all the difference.
